Band Practice 2/22/99: A couple dozen people packed nut to butt in Jake’s house. The instruments tuned, the amps plugged in, and the human smoke machine in full swing, the pimpcore begins. Starting with a beat from Emile forging the time foundation of rock and metal...Jake fills the low end of the sound spectrum with some of the most intricate bass work I have ever heard, his stack ramming damned souls into your ears...Mark starts in with some riffs so violent as to make your ears bleed...Balvin rips out what’s left of your ear drums with distorted rhythms...Joel adds the apocalyptic synthesized sounds...then it’s Denio’s turn to break your ribs with steel toed lyrics kicking you while you’re down.
I was lucky enough to get a hold of Mike Denio during a short break from the carnage. Ears still ringing, this is what he had to say:
Q: What’s your name, what band are you in, and where is the band based?
A: My name's Mike. I'm in Mad Kactus. The band is based in Mass.
Q: Describe your music.
A: Fuckin' kickass guitar riffs with killer lyrics.
Q: Any plans for a CD or Tape any time soon?
A: We're goin' to the fuckin' studio February 27th to cut a demo tape.
Q: What's your favorite movie?
A: Bullet
Q: Why?
A: Fuckin' good story lines, gangs 'n shit, 'n a fuckin' vietnam vet.
Q: Who is your favorite band?
A: Limp Bizkit. 'Cause Fred Durst writes the most kickass lyrics that actually mean somethin' 'n shit. Fuckin the scratchin' guitars, bass, just everythin' mixed togather. 'N their band gives "metal-rap" new meaning. They're like a revolution 'n shit.
Q: What's your favorite Mad Kactus song?
A: Devil From Above. 'cause it's somethin' that actually happened to me. I can feel the music better.
Q: Any plans for getting signed?
A: No plans yet, but I'm still prayin'.
Q: Where does your inspiration come from?
A: Korn, Limp Bizkit, Def Tones, real life experiences, and the many people I deal with every day.
Q: Why the name "Mad Kactus"?
A: Why not?
